How to read an ingredient label

Four quick tips that make any INCI list easier to understand.

  1. 01

    Order matters

Ingredients are listed from most to least. The first five usually make up most of the formula.

  2. 02

    Find the 1% line

Preservatives like phenoxyethanol are used at 1% or less, so anything listed after them is a small amount.

  3. 03

    Spot hidden fragrance

Parfum, fragrance, limonene, linalool and essential oils all add scent and can irritate sensitive skin.

  4. 04

    Not all alcohols dry

Cetyl and stearyl alcohol are softening. It's alcohol denat. high up the list that can be drying.

FAQ

Good questions

What is a skincare dupe?

A more affordable product with a similar formulation to one you already like: the same key actives at a similar place in the ingredient list, without paying for the brand name.

Are dupes identical to the original?

No. We never call a product identical. Texture, fragrance and exact concentrations can differ, so we show what is shared, what is missing and what is extra, and you decide.

Is DupeDesk medical advice?

No. Reports are for information only. Always patch-test new products, and see a dermatologist for skin conditions.

Which products do you cover?

We are starting with serums, moisturisers, sunscreens and cleansers that are easy to buy in India, and adding more over time.
